Meetings

The WENOCA meetings are usually held at the Jewish Community Center, 236 Charlotte Street in Asheville. The meetings start with a half hour social gathering from 7:00 p.m. At 7:30 there is a brief period of business and announcement followed by a presentation. The presentations are usually by guest speakers who address issues of concern to the WENOCA Group. The topics for future meetings are listed below.

Social 7 pm - Program 7:30 pm

"Politics: The Art of the Possible"

After an extensive process of questionnaires, interviews, and deliberations at both the Wenoca Group and North Carolina Chapter levels, the Sierra Club is pleased to endorse Terry Bellamy for Mayor, along with Cecil Bothwell, Robin Cape, Esther Manheimer, and Gordon Smith for City Council in the upcoming Asheville City elections.  All four endorsed City Council candidates have accepted our invitation to attend the final Wenoca program of the year.

Election day is Tuesday, November 3rd.  Early voting begins Thursday, October 15th and ends Saturday, October 31st.  Those Sierrans who wish to vote for Robin Cape need to remember that her name will not be on the ballot, as she is running a write-in campaign.

We are extremely fortunate to have more endorsed candidates (four) than open City Council seats (three).  Let's hope that this signifies a return to the days when environmental protection was a near-unanimous, non-partisan value, rather than the wedge issue of the recent past.

And let's be sure to take advantage of this opportunity to meet the candidates, hear their positions, and make them aware of our concerns. Please join us (and them) at the Jewish Community Center, 236 Charlotte Street, on Thursday, October 22nd.  Social time begins at 7:00PM, program starts at 7:30PM.
